As we will see, John of the Cross will prove to be an unfailing guide and a source of inspiration for Th\u00e9r\u00e8se from the beginning to the end of her religious life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Provide an initial knowledge of St. John of the Cross and St. Th\u00e9r\u00e8se of Lisieux and his influence on her, with a special attention given to first-hand contact with their writings; offer a method for the critical analysis of theological texts, in particular those of the two Saints.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Content<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The course will begin with an exposition on Saint John of the Cross: his life and works, and his doctrine, with a particular focus on <em>The Spiritual Canticle <\/em>and <em>The Living Flame of Love<\/em>. The course will then proceed to take into consideration St. Th\u00e9r\u00e8se of Lisieux: her life and works, her doctrine, and, in particular, her contacts with St. John of the Cross and her personal interpretation and experience of St. John of the Cross\u2019s life-experience and doctrine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Method<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lectures in the classroom, integrated with personal study: a guideline with indications for some selected writings of John and Th\u00e9r\u00e8se will be made available to the students from the beginning of the course.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Criteria for evaluation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The students may either write an essay (8-10 pages in length), or otherwise they may sit a 20-question written test.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Time distribution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One third of the study time will consist in the 24 hours of lessons in the classroom; the other two-thirds of the study time (for a total of 75 study hours) will be left to personal study.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Essential bibliography<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">SAINT TH\u00c9R\u00c8SE OF THE CHILD JESUS AND OF THE HOLY FACE, <em>Story of a Soul: Study Edition<\/em>; <em>Letters of St. Th\u00e9r\u00e8se of Lisieux.
